Introduction of TejaS (Agri-drone: Small Category)

TejaS is a small-category agricultural drone, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a specialised design intended for agricultural use. TejaS has state-of-the-art components and imaging systems designed specifically for the agricultural purpose of spraying.

The key differentiators are:

  • Compact Design: Due to its lightweight and portable nature, TejaS, the small-category agricultural drone, is easy to deploy and manoeuvre over agricultural fields of various crops.
  • Autonomous Operation: TejaS uses GPS and navigation systems to fly according to pre-programmed routes or carry out automated activities it is designed for.
  • Data Analysis: During the flight, the drone gathers copious amounts of data that can be processed with specialised software to produce insights that farmers can use.
  • Sustainability: TejaS promotes more environmentally friendly farming methods by enabling targeted interventions and lowering the need for widespread chemical applications.

After completing the manufacturing stage and before the drone is ready for sale, a crucial milestone in its journey is obtaining Type Certification. This achievement not only validates the drone’s technical specifications but also facilitates its integration into the airspace, representing a major breakthrough in its development and deployment process.

Drones operating in India must have DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) type certification in order to guarantee operational safety, security, and regulatory compliance. A drone that satisfies the requirements and regulations set forth by the aviation authority is certified by the DGCA, called the Type Certification.

What exactly is Type Certification?

Type Certification is a process which involves the issuance of a written assurance (statement of conformity) by a certification body that the product, service or system meets specific requirements as per the scheme. This process culminates with the issuance of a type certificate by DGCA based on the statement of conformity and recommendation.

In the certification criteria for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), the DGCA checks various aspects to make a reliable evaluation decision regarding the UAS’s airworthiness (safety and security) and to maintain certification.

UAS has been categorised into three categories: Aeroplane, Rotorcraft and Hybrid.

The aeroplane, rotorcraft and hybrid unmanned aircraft systems have been further sub-categorised into the following three sub-categories:

i. remotely piloted aircraft system
ii. model remotely piloted aircraft system
iii. autonomous unmanned aircraft system

UAS has been classified based on maximum all-up weight, including payload, as follows:

i. Nano: Less than or equal to 250 grams
ii. Micro: Greater than 250 grams and less than or equal to 2 kgs
iii. Small: Greater than 2 kgs and less than or equal to 25 kgs
iv. Medium: Greater than 25 kgs and less than or equal to 150 kgs
v. Large: Greater than 150 kgs

The thorough assessments comprise in-depth analyses of the drone’s flight characteristics, structural integrity, system reliability, and operational limit compliance.

TejaS, manufactured by Pavaman Aviation, has successfully undergone the certification process as a Small Category Rotorcraft Agricultural Drone by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), thereby announcing its readiness to serve the farmers and, in turn, the agricultural sector.
